In recent years, Indonesia has been phasing in the Kurikulum Merdeka (Emancipated Curriculum) to replace the rigid, rote-learning structures of the past.

Teachers now have freedom to do project-based learning. For example, instead of memorizing about bamboo, SMP students might build a water filtration system using bamboo (engineering & science).
