Created by the same team behind the excellent PS3 emulator RPCS3, RPCSX is an experimental emulator written in C++. It initially targeted the PS4 and has since expanded its goals to include the PS5. However, the landscape is changing fast. The most promising project is (also known in the community as ChadPS4), a free and open-source compatibility layer for Windows, Linux, and macOS. As of March 2026, ShadPS4 has achieved a significant milestone. Version 0.15.0 can now run over 100 games, with 109 titles fully playable on Windows—a threefold increase from just a year prior. On Linux, it runs an impressive 119 games. The emulator can now run high-profile titles like Bloodborne , Dark Souls: Remastered , Red Dead Redemption , Yakuza 0 , and Driveclub , with some games running at 4K and 60 FPS. Despite this progress, emulation is still a resource-intensive process that can cause crashes or graphical glitches, even on high-end PCs.
