While initially enthusiastic, Audrey has a last-minute panic and backs out, leaving Paul to undergo the irreversible procedure alone. Upon waking up in his new, tiny body, Paul discovers that the downsized world is not the utopia it was promised to be. His wife has abandoned him, his financial situation isn't as rosy as expected, and he soon finds himself divorced and living in a modest apartment. He befriends his hedonistic neighbor, a wealthy playboy named Dusan (Christoph Waltz), and becomes involved with Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau), a Vietnamese political activist who was cruelly downsized against her will and smuggled into the United States in a box. She works as a cleaning lady for the rich residents of Leisureland, representing the exploited underclass of this miniature society. Together, Paul, Dusan, and Ngoc Lan grapple with a series of environmental, ethical, and existential crises that force Paul to confront what it truly means to live a good life.
